Orienteering at Fairburn

Orienteering is the sport of navigating unfamiliar terrains using a map. It is easy to learn but always challenging!

The objective is to walk or run between a series of control points marked on the map. It is up to you to choose your route, both on and off trails that will help you find all the points and get back to the finish line in the quickest time.

Any kind of map & terrain can be used for orienteering (even a street map), but the best ones are detailed five colour topographic maps developed for the sport. The maps show boulders, cliffs, ditches and fences, in addition to elevation, vegetation and trails.

If you love maps, exploring the great outdoors and enjoy challenges then this activity is for you!

Often called the “thinking sport”, this activity is sure to exercise both mind and body, and has proven to be a great activity for everyone regardless of age or experience.

For the competitive athlete, you can experience the exhilaration of running through the course at top speed, or for the less competitive, enjoy the challenge at a more leisurely pace.

For the less experienced  in the art of map reading, our experienced instructors are on hand to give help and advice.
